About Tramadol

Tramadol is a pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is an atypical opioid, a substance that acts as a central analgesic. This synthetic drug is an analogue of codeine that is thought to alleviate pain by acting on GABA, noradrenalin and serotonin levels.

Tramadol is a creation of the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH. It is sold as Tramal in Germany and is licensed for sale in other countries under different names. This medication is most often available in the form of a hydrochloride salt called Tramadol hydrochloride. There are both oral agents and injections of Tramadol available, and it is sometimes combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen).

Tramadol is one tenth as strong as morphine when administered intravenously. Oral doses can be taken in amounts that range from 50 to 400 mg per day. Tablets that consist of 37.5 mg of tramdol and 325 mg of paracetamol are used orally in doses of one or two tablets every four to six hours as needed.

Unlike other opiods, Tramadol is not regarded as a controlled substance. In some countries (Australia and the United States, for example), it can be obtained by prescription, and in a few countries, it is available without a prescription.
